Attempt to change West Sussex County Council

Liberal Democrats are asking the governance committee of West Sussex County Council to scrap the County Council's system of cabinet style decision-making, following a 'systematic failure of political leadership'.

Conservative-dominated West Sussex County Council, which is due for elections in May 2021, is instead being asked to opt for a committee-based system with members from all parties.

Earlier this summer, inspectors were critical of Fire & Rescue Services and Children's Services in the county, prompting Cllr Dr James Walsh, leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition on the county council, to declare a 'systematic failure of political leadership' of the Conservative cabinet.

Cllr Dr Walsh is calling for the change to be in place by May 2020.

Liberal Democrat councillors are already leading a similar change to the political decision-making structure at Arun District Council, following their excellent election results in May 2019 that gave them leadership of the district council for the first time.
